Funeral insurance payout timing and cash access

Momentum Life says valid funeral insurance claims are usually paid within 24 to 48 hours of approval. The clock starts at approval, not at the death, and Momentum publishes no time for approval itself. How soon the money arrives also depends on the documents, premiums being up to date, the cause of death in the first 24 months, and who is named to receive it.
A funeral insurance claim is a request to the insurer to pay the benefit after the death of a person covered by the policy. For Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance, the claimant fills in a claim form and supplies proof of the claim "to our satisfaction" at their own expense, which can include a form completed by a medical practitioner and a death certificate. Momentum then decides whether the claim is valid. If it is, it pays in New Zealand dollars to the Policy Owner or, after the owner's death, to the nominated beneficiaries; if none is named, to the owner or the owner's executor. The first stage, getting from a death to a decision, has no published timeframe. That is why this page is about dependencies, not a promise of speed. If you are arranging a funeral now, read the section on paying in the meantime first.
From a death to a payment: the steps
| Step | What happens | Timing we can source |
|---|---|---|
| 1. The death | A doctor or the coroner establishes the cause. Where a coroner is involved, a post mortem is usually done the next working day, and sometimes takes 2 to 3 days. | Release of the body is usually later on the day of the post mortem; for suspicious deaths or complex examinations it may take two to three days (Coroners Court) |
| 2. Registering the death | The funeral director registers it. If there is none, the person arranging the disposal does. Registration is free. | No later than 3 working days after the body is disposed of (govt.nz) |
| 3. The death certificate | The official certificate costs $35. | "Most people get" it in 1 to 2 weeks, and govt.nz says not to order it until after the funeral (govt.nz) |
| 4. Making the claim | Contact Momentum and get the claim form. | Claims line 0800 108 108, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm NZST (Momentum: Claims) |
| 5. Assessment | Momentum checks the policy and the proof. | Not published. Momentum says valid claims are paid "without unnecessary delay" |
| 6. Payment | Paid to the person the policy names. | "Usually within 24 - 48 hours of approval" (wording, PDF page 8) |
The wording asks for "the appropriate certification e.g. death certificate and/or a confirmed diagnosis of death by a Medical Practitioner". It does not say whether a funeral director's registration confirmation will do, or whether the official certificate is needed. Since the official certificate can take 1 to 2 weeks, ask Momentum which it will accept before you decide what to order.
What can slow a payout
- Premiums or cancellation. Momentum will not pay a claim unless all premiums due have been paid and the policy was not cancelled when the claim event occurred. Check this first.
- The cause of death in the first 24 months. For the first 24 months only accidental death is paid, and only if it happens within 90 days of the accident. Any other death in that window pays no benefit and Momentum refunds the premiums paid for that person. In that case there is no benefit to wait for. See what is refunded in the first 24 months. Momentum may ask for "any other medical or other information that we reasonably require" on any claim, so an accident claim in that window may take more paperwork.
- A coroner. The Coroners Court says a post mortem is usually done the next working day and sometimes takes up to 2 or 3 days. Nothing we found says how a coroner's investigation affects an insurer's decision, so ask Momentum if the death is under investigation.
- Who is named. If the policy owner has died and no beneficiary was named, the benefit goes to the owner's executor. An executor may need a grant of probate first. The Ministry of Justice gives a typical timeframe of 15 working days if nothing more is needed; govt.nz says 6 to 8 weeks (Ministry of Justice, govt.nz). Under the Administration Act 1969 an insurer may, but need not, pay sums of up to $40,000 without a grant (from 24 September 2025). We do not know what Momentum does. See probate in New Zealand.
- Incomplete or misleading information. The wording says information given must be true, correct and complete, and Momentum may decline a claim, cancel the policy or reduce the benefit if it is not.
- The calendar. The claims line is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, so a call about a Friday-evening death may have to wait until Monday. Momentum also lists [email protected].
What other insurers say about timing
Each insurer states a different point at which its clock starts, so the figures are not like for like.
| Insurer | What it publishes |
|---|---|
| Momentum Life | "Usually within 24 - 48 hours of approval" |
| Chubb Life | "Usually pay out within 48 hours of claim approval" |
| Greenwich Life | Lump sum "usually paid within 48 hours" of forms |
| Asteron Life (underwrites AA Life; its general death-claim page) | Payment "typically takes two days" once a claim is accepted; status update within 5-7 working days |
Some insurers publish a share of claims paid, but the measures are not defined alike, so we do not compare them. Nor can we say how long a typical claim takes in total, and we do not estimate one.
Can funeral insurance pay the funeral director directly?
With Momentum, no. The beneficiary must be a natural person, and Momentum "can't pay a Benefit directly to a company, charity or other organisation". The money goes to a person, who then pays the funeral director. We have not checked the position at other insurers; see whether funeral insurance pays the funeral director. Ask your director what they need and when. FDANZ says only its members are obliged by their Standards and Code of Ethics to be transparent about costs (FDANZ report).
Paying for the funeral while you wait
The funeral will usually happen before any insurance money arrives, so these may matter more:
- The deceased's bank account. A bank can release money to pay for the funeral without waiting for probate and without you being the executor (govt.nz).
- The Work and Income Funeral Grant, up to $2,697.43, with "no time limit" to apply (Work and Income). Other help is in paying for a funeral. If you are in difficulty, see if you cannot afford a funeral.
- A talk with the funeral director about timing. Their terms are theirs to set.
If a claim is slow or refused
Complain to Momentum first: 0800 108 108 or [email protected]. It acknowledges complaints within 2 business days. If the complaint remains unresolved you can go to the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme (IFSO), which is free and whose assessment is binding on Momentum (Momentum: Complaints). Our page on funeral insurance disputes explains the steps. A complaint about advice from Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver goes to the scheme named in its disclosure.
If you are weighing cover for yourself
Read this page as a reason to set expectations. Funeral Insurance accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75 with benefits of $3,000 to $30,000. It is not a savings plan: total premiums can add up to more than the benefit, the benefit may not cover the whole cost of a funeral, and for the first 24 months only accidental death is paid. Momentum Life Limited's A.M. Best rating is B (Fair), which Momentum's own table places in its "Vulnerable" range (Momentum: Financial strength). See how funeral insurance works and how to claim. Adviser's view
Funeral insurance is not a quick-cash product at the moment you need it. Momentum Life says valid claims are usually paid within 24 to 48 hours of approval, but it publishes no time for approval itself, and the documents, the cause of death and who is named as payee all affect the date. Plan for the funeral to be paid before the money arrives.
