ANZ funeral cover: checking the relevant policy

ANZ does not offer a funeral insurance policy of its own that we could find. ANZ's life insurance page says its insurance products are "underwritten by third party insurers", names Chubb Life Insurance New Zealand Limited as its life and income partner, and says its life cover "includes an advance payment to help with immediate expenses like a funeral". It gives no amount. This is as at 20 October 2026.

So an "ANZ funeral cover" search can mean three different things, and the right phone number depends on which one is yours. ANZ is the seller and the brand on the paperwork. The insurer that holds the risk and pays the claim is a different company. That matters at a claim, when the family needs to know who to call, and when comparing covers, because the rating, the exclusions and the premium rules belong to the insurer, not the bank. This page sets out the three possibilities, what ANZ publishes about the funeral payment, and what to look for.

Which ANZ policy might you mean

If you hold or are looking at What it is Who deals with claims
ANZ Life & Living A closed range: ANZ says it no longer offers it to new customers Chubb Life, per ANZ's page
ANZ life insurance sold now Life cover promoted by ANZ and underwritten by a third party; Chubb Life is the partner ANZ names Chubb Life, unless your schedule names another insurer
A standalone funeral plan A separate funeral policy from an insurer such as Chubb or Momentum The funeral insurer named on it, not ANZ

The first two rows come from ANZ's page. The last is not an ANZ product at all, which is why a search for "ANZ funeral insurance" can be a dead end. If a funeral plan was bought "through ANZ", read the policy document for the insurer's name.

What ANZ's page says, and does not say

ANZ's life insurance page (ANZ: Life insurance) says four things relevant here.

That leaves gaps, and we will not fill them with a guess. We do not know the size of the advance on your policy, whether it is capped, or how it interacts with the sum insured. Other insurers' advances give a pattern. AIA's clause, for example, is an early part-payment that reduces the death benefit by the amount paid (see our AIA page). But ANZ's policy has its own wording, so ask for it.

Who to call

Ask for the policy schedule and the full policy document, not a summary. The schedule shows the sum insured, the owner, the premium type and who the insurer is.

Four questions to put to your policy documents

  1. How big is the advance, and who gets it? Look for a clause called something like funeral advance, bereavement benefit or early payment. Note whether it is a fixed sum or a percentage, and whether a claim must be accepted first.
  2. Does it reduce the death benefit? An "advance" is normally part of the cover, not extra. If the cover is small, the advance cannot exceed it.
  3. How do premiums behave? Stepped premiums rise each year with age. The FMA says most life premiums rise annually with age or inflation, and that cheaper-at-first policies can cost more over the long term (FMA: Insurance). Check this before you keep a policy into older age.
  4. Is anything excluded? Life cover is underwritten on health. If a condition was excluded or loaded at the start, the schedule says so.

How Chubb's own funeral cover differs

The nearest thing to a standalone funeral policy in this family is Chubb Life's own Funeral Cover, which Chubb sells under its own name and which is not an ANZ product. Chubb's page says it takes ages 50 to 80, up to $30,000, covers accidental death immediately and all causes after 24 months, and refunds 100% of premiums for another cause of death inside the 24 months (Chubb: Funeral cover). Chubb Life's A.M. Best rating is A (Excellent) (Chubb: Life financial strength). Do not confuse it with Chubb Insurance New Zealand, the general insurer, which has a different rating. Our Chubb funeral insurance page has the detail.

Where Momentum Life's funeral insurance fits

Momentum Life Limited (FSP472286) issues a separate funeral policy, Funeral Insurance, that a bank customer can take out without any link to an ANZ life policy. Applicants must be New Zealanders aged 40 to 75 and are asked no health questions. You choose a benefit of $3,000 to $30,000. Cover for the first 24 months is limited to accidental death within 90 days of the accident, paid at three times the benefit; death from another cause in those months pays nothing and returns all premiums for that person, and after 24 months any cause is paid. Premiums are fixed each year until the 89th birthday and can be changed for everyone on the plan with 30 days' notice. The policy has no terminal illness benefit, total premiums can end up greater than the benefit, and the benefit may not cover the whole funeral. It does not accept new applicants over 75.

Momentum's A.M. Best rating is B (Fair), which Momentum's own table places in its "Vulnerable" range (Momentum Life: Financial strength). A rating is an opinion of an insurer's ability to pay claims, not a recommendation. See the Momentum Life Funeral Cover page for the full terms, and our comparison of funeral insurers for the others.

Where to get advice

The buttons on this page open Momentum Life's online application, one option among several. They do not relate to any ANZ policy you hold. If you want help reading an ANZ or Chubb schedule, or comparing it with a standalone plan on your details, a licensed adviser can do that. QuoteHub is a Momentum Life partner and Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver may receive a commission if you buy a Momentum policy; see how we are paid. Adviser's view

ANZ does not underwrite life cover itself. Its page says products are underwritten by third-party insurers and names Chubb Life as its life partner. The funeral element is an advance payment inside life cover, with no amount on the page. Which policy you hold decides who to call, and the answer is on your schedule.
