NZ Seniors Funeral Insurance is a funeral policy issued by Pinnacle Life Limited and sold by New Zealand Seniors, a trading name of Greenstone Financial Services NZ Limited. It accepts New Zealand residents aged 18 to 79 with no medical tests, for $3,000 to $30,000. In the first 12 months only an accidental death or accidental serious injury pays. After that it pays for any cause.

Who issues it and who sells it

NZ Seniors' site says all its insurance products "are issued by Pinnacle Life Limited (NZBN 9429030397248) and distributed and promoted by Greenstone Financial Services NZ Limited (NZBN 9429047013582)". That is two companies, and they do different jobs. Pinnacle Life is the insurer that pays claims. Greenstone sells and promotes the product, and its disclosure statement says "the Insurer pays us a commission of up to 62% of each premium", prepared 25 March 2024 (NZ Seniors: Disclosure). That commission is worth knowing about when you read the marketing.

A.M. Best rates Pinnacle Life B+ (Good) as at 15 April 2026 (Pinnacle Life: Financial strength). NZ Seniors has no rating of its own. OneChoice is a second brand also issued by Pinnacle Life; see OneChoice funeral insurance.

What the terms say

From NZ Seniors' funeral insurance FAQ and comparison pages, and its policy document (issue date 23 May 2021), as read on 20 October 2026. The policy document may have been updated since, so check the current version before you apply.

Point What NZ Seniors publishes
Who can apply New Zealand residents aged 18 to 79, guaranteed acceptance, no medical tests
Cover amount $3,000 to $30,000
First 12 months Only an accidental death, or an accidental serious injury, pays; no benefit for any other cause
Accidental death Triple the benefit; "within 90 days of the accident"; from the day the policy starts
After 12 months Pays for death from any cause
Premiums Level, not rising each year with age; none to pay from the 85th birthday
Refund A full refund within the 30-day cooling-off period if no claim has been made; "no refund of premiums after the cooling off period"
Terminal illness Pays 100% of the benefit if diagnosed with 12 months or less to live, but not if diagnosed within the first 12 months
Extras 25% Bonus Cover from age 85; Early Cash Out of 75% of the benefit from age 85, which cancels the policy
Claims "Usually paid within 1 business day of all completed documentation being received"

Two more points are in the policy document. The accidental serious injury benefit covers defined conditions such as total loss of sight in both eyes or paraplegia, and ends at the policy anniversary after the 75th birthday. And Pinnacle may raise your premium rate only if it changes the rate for all, or the same group of, Seniors Funeral Insurance policyowners, with at least 90 days' written notice.

Does it pay out more than you paid in?

Not necessarily. NZ Seniors' own FAQ says: "the total amount of premiums payable over the life of the policy has the potential to exceed the cover amount". Because the premium is level, you can test it with arithmetic. Divide the benefit by a monthly premium to find how many months of payments equal the benefit. These example premiums are made up to show the method, not quotes from any insurer:

Example monthly premium Months to equal a $10,000 benefit About
$30 333 28 years
$50 200 17 years
$70 143 12 years

Someone who starts at 55 and lives to 90 pays for 30 years at NZ Seniors, because payments stop at 85. If your real quote multiplied by your expected payment years is above the benefit, you are paying for more than the amount you receive. That is the price of cover that needs no health questions. Our break-even calculator does the sum for your own figure. NZ Seniors publishes no price, so you need a quote.

Rating A.M. Best B+ (Good) A.M. Best B (Fair)

Both grades are A.M. Best's, so they sit on one scale; A.M. Best says a rating is an opinion and not a recommendation to buy. Momentum was affirmed at B (Fair) on 11 February 2026, and Momentum's financial strength page lists B under its own "Vulnerable" heading. Momentum's first 24 months pay only for accidental death, and its premiums can also add up to more than its benefit. The benefit of either policy may not cover a whole funeral. The side-by-side detail is on Momentum versus NZ Seniors, and Momentum's own terms are on the Momentum Life Funeral Cover page.

How the two windows differ in practice

A shorter window is not automatically better. NZ Seniors' 12 months is half of Momentum's 24, so a death from illness in month 18 is covered at NZ Seniors and is not at Momentum. But if someone dies from illness in month 6, Momentum returns all premiums for that person and NZ Seniors returns nothing once the cooling-off period has passed. A person who is already ill should weigh both rules, and ask each insurer what happens to premiums in the first year before applying.

Who it suits, and age edges

Neither product asks about health, so they suit people who expect to be declined or heavily loaded elsewhere, or who want cover started without paperwork. A healthy person may get more cover for less through underwritten cover from a licensed adviser. Edge cases:

Questions to ask before you apply

  1. What is my quote for this age and amount, and when do I stop paying?
  2. What happens to premiums if I die of illness in the first year?
  3. Does the policy document I will receive match the one on the website?
  4. How much commission does the seller receive, and is that in a disclosure statement?
  5. Is the full cost over my expected lifetime more than the benefit?

Where to get advice

The buttons on this page open Momentum Life's online application, which is one option, not the only one, and which cannot take a 76 to 79 year old. A licensed adviser can compare NZ Seniors, Momentum and others on your own details. QuoteHub is a Momentum Life partner and Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver may receive a commission if you buy a Momentum policy; see how we are paid. Adviser's view

NZ Seniors accepts a wider age band than Momentum (18 to 79 against 40 to 75), has a shorter 12-month window and a terminal illness benefit. The trade-off is that an illness death in that first year pays nothing, and premiums are refunded only inside the 30-day cooling-off period. Neither policy suits everyone, and the right comparison is a quote from each for your age and amount.
