Sovereign funeral cover and legacy AIA policy benefits

Sovereign policies are closed to new sales, and AIA New Zealand services the ones still in force. AIA's list of closed Sovereign ranges names no standalone funeral policy, though it says the list is not exhaustive. Any funeral money in an old Sovereign policy is therefore most likely a feature of the life cover, and your own wording and schedule decide.

A legacy Sovereign policy is a policy issued under the Sovereign name that is no longer sold but remains in force for existing customers. AIA's page says these past product ranges "remain in place for existing customers", and that its list, which includes Sovereign TotalCare and TotalCare Max policies issued since February 2001, is not exhaustive. Funeral money inside a life policy can take the form of an early payment, a way to get part of the cover paid quickly. Whether your policy has one, how much it is and how it is paid depend on the wording you were issued. This page explains how to check, what AIA says it will apply at claim time, and what to weigh before you replace anything. It is not a statement about the terms of any particular Sovereign policy.

Does Sovereign still sell funeral cover

Not that we found. AIA's page on product updates describes the Sovereign ranges as "no longer available for sale". It lists them as Sovereign TotalCare and TotalCare Max, Sovereign Private Health, and the Absolute Health and MajorCare health ranges. None of those names is a funeral policy. The page adds that "the list of past products on this page is not exhaustive", and tells holders of other products to ask their adviser or call AIA on 0800 500 108 (Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm).

We looked for the date Sovereign's business moved to AIA New Zealand and could not find it on AIA's pages, so we do not give one. It makes no difference to what you do next. Our guide to Sovereign life insurance covers who services the policy and how to get a copy of your wording, and who holds my old policy helps with other legacy brands.

Finding a funeral payment in your wording

Look in your policy schedule and wording for early-payment features. The words to search for are "funeral", "bereavement", "advance", "early payment" and "immediate expenses". Then ask AIA the questions in this table.

Question Why it matters
Does my policy include an early payment on death? Some policies do and some do not; only your wording says
How much is it, and is it a fixed sum or a share of the cover? It decides how much of a funeral bill it could meet
Who is it paid to, and what must they provide? Some early payments go to a named beneficiary and not to the estate
Is it taken off the final claim payment? If so, it brings the money forward and does not add to it
Which version of the wording applies to my policy? Enhancements are dated, and they apply to claims on or after their effective date

AIA states one rule that helps. If your product has been updated or enhanced, then in the event of a claim AIA says it will compare the wording issued to you with the latest wording for your product and apply the most favourable terms. AIA lists dated enhancement summaries for the closed Sovereign ranges, for example "Closed Sovereign Enhancements - effective 8 March 2024". An enhancement helps only when the claimable event is on or after the date it took effect.

To see how such a clause can be built, look at one published example. Pinnacle Life's sample policy pays a $15,000 early payment to the nominated beneficiary on written notice of death, takes it off the later life payment, and requires it to be paid back if the life claim is not approved. Your Sovereign wording may differ on every point, which is exactly why the questions above matter.

What AIA's current life cover says

AIA's current life cover page lists an early payment of up to $25,000 for funeral and immediate costs, with conditions applying (AIA: Life cover). That describes AIA's current range. It tells you nothing about what a Sovereign policy issued years ago contains, so do not assume an old policy has the same feature or the same amount.

Before you replace an old policy

If you want separate funeral cover

A guaranteed-acceptance funeral policy is a different thing from an old life policy. Each has an early-death limit and an age band, and on each the total premiums can end up larger than the benefit. The benefit may not cover the whole funeral.

Product Ages Benefit First restricted period
Momentum Life Funeral Insurance 40 to 75 $3,000 to $30,000 24 months: only accidental death pays; premiums refunded for another cause
AA Life Funeral Cover (Asteron Life) 50 to 79 $5,000 to $30,000 24 months: accidental death pays; premiums refunded for natural death
OneChoice and NZ Seniors (Pinnacle Life) 18 to 79 $3,000 to $30,000 12 months: only accidental death pays; no premium refund

Momentum Life Limited's financial strength rating is B (Fair) from A.M. Best, affirmed on 11 February 2026, and Momentum's own table places B in its "Vulnerable" range (Momentum: financial strength). Momentum does not accept new applicants over 75. See Momentum Funeral Cover, AA funeral insurance and the wider comparison.

Compared: those three products, on age, benefit and early restriction, as at 20 October 2026, from each insurer's own pages and wordings. Not every New Zealand insurer is included. This is a reading of documents, not a score.

Savings and a prepaid plan are other routes. The Work and Income Funeral Grant is up to $2,697.43, with tests, and prepaid funeral cover can affect it (Work and Income). FDANZ puts an average funeral for 50 guests at $11,700 for a cremation and $14,300 for a burial (FDANZ); see funeral costs.

Where to get advice

The buttons on this page open Momentum Life's online application for new cover. Nothing here asks you to give up a Sovereign policy. General information, not advice. QuoteHub is a Momentum Life partner, and Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver may receive a commission if you buy a Momentum policy; see how we are paid. For a complaint about a Sovereign policy, start with AIA's complaints process on its site, and check which external dispute scheme your wording names. Adviser's view

If you hold a Sovereign policy, any funeral money is most likely a feature of your life cover, not a separate funeral product, and your own wording decides. Read it and ask AIA before you cancel or replace anything, because a new policy is assessed on your health today. If you want separate funeral cover, several products exist, each with early-death limits.
