Dignity funeral insurance in NZ: what we found and the alternatives
Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name.
We could not find a Dignity Insurance funeral product for New Zealand residents. Dignity Insurance is a trading name of Neilson Financial Services Pty Ltd, an Australian distributor, and its own site refers to Australian residents aged 50 to 80. Neilson's NZ brand is Golden Insurance, which asks health questions. Figures quoted for "Dignity" elsewhere are unverified.
What we could verify
Dignity Insurance describes itself as a trading name of Neilson Financial Services Pty Ltd (ABN 52 668 314 896, AFSL 552284), part of the Neilson group. Its site says cover is offered to "Australian residents aged 50 to 80", describes the insurer as Australian-owned, and does not mention New Zealand. Its footer names Hallmark Life Insurance Company Ltd as the underwriter, with Dignity Insurance acting as agent (Dignity Insurance, Australia, retrieved 20 October 2026).
The New Zealand link is Golden Insurance. Golden's NZ site says it is "distributed and promoted by Neilson Financial Services Pty Ltd" and lists "Dignity Insurance, Direct Cover, British Seniors, Cover Direct, Cover Today, Seniors Choice, and Smart Insurance" in its awards section as brands in the same group. Its footer says Neilson Financial Services Pty Limited "is not a licensed financial advice provider in New Zealand". Golden's products are issued by Hallmark Life Insurance Company Limited (Golden Insurance, retrieved 20 October 2026).
What we could not verify
- Whether a product called Dignity funeral insurance is on sale to New Zealanders today. We found no Dignity page aimed at New Zealand.
- Any Dignity entry age, benefit range, waiting period or premium structure for NZ.
- A current financial strength rating for Hallmark Life Insurance Company Limited. We do not publish one.
We have not used figures such as benefits of $3,000 to $30,000, a 24-month waiting period or premiums that end at 85 or 89 for "Dignity" funeral insurance. They match Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance or other NZ products, and we found no source attaching them to Dignity, so treat them as unverified.
What Golden Insurance, the sister brand, offers in NZ
Golden Insurance is not the same product as funeral insurance, but it is the closest verified relative.

How the options compare on facts
For ordinary funeral cover with no health questions, these are the options that publish their terms. Details are from each provider's own pages, retrieved 17 to 20 October 2026.
| Momentum Life | NZ Seniors and OneChoice | AA Life | Chubb Life | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry age | 40 to 75 | 18 to 79 | 50 to 79 | 50 to 80 |
| Benefit | $3,000 to $30,000 | $3,000 to $30,000 | $5,000 to $30,000 | Up to $30,000 |
| Accident-only window | 24 months | 12 months | 24 months | 24 months |
| Health questions | None | None | None | None |
Momentum's first 24 months pay only for accidental death within 90 days of the accident. For any other death in that window nothing is paid and all premiums for that person are refunded. Momentum Life Funeral Insurance does not accept new applicants over 75. The full table, with premium structure and ratings, is in our funeral insurance comparison and the list of funeral insurance companies.
How to check any funeral insurance brand
Before you pay, ask for these and keep the answers in writing:
- The legal entity that issues the policy, not just the trading name. A brand can sit on a distributor, an agent and an underwriter, as Dignity and Golden do.
- The underwriter and its rating, with the rating agency named. Agencies use different scales, so the same letter can mean different things at each.
- The entry age and whether cover is guaranteed acceptance. Acceptance with health questions is a different product.
- How long only an accident pays, and whether premiums come back for death inside that time.
- When premiums stop and whether total premiums can pass the benefit.
- How to complain, including the external scheme. Momentum names the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman (IFSO).
The Financial Service Providers Register lists financial service providers operating in New Zealand (FSPR). Our page on funeral insurance underwriters explains who stands behind each brand.
If you need funeral funding now
Funeral insurance does not help with a death that has already happened, and nothing pays in the first 24 months for illness. Look at savings, a prepaid plan and the Work and Income Funeral Grant of up to $2,697.43, though prepaid cover can affect it (Work and Income: Funeral Grant). A licensed adviser can compare underwritten life cover if you can answer health questions.
Getting advice
The buttons on this page open Momentum Life's online application for Funeral Insurance, one option among several and not a Dignity product. Momentum Life holds an A.M. Best rating of B (Fair), in the range Momentum calls "Vulnerable"; see its financial strength page. Adviser's view
We could not find a Dignity Insurance funeral product aimed at New Zealand residents. What we can verify is that Dignity Insurance belongs to the same Australian group as Golden Insurance, which does sell here, with health questions rather than guaranteed acceptance. If you want funeral cover in NZ, check the legal entity on any quote and compare it with the options that publish their terms.
