AMP funeral insurance: tracing an old AMP policy
Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name.
AMP does not sell funeral insurance that we could find. AMP's own page says that if you bought an AMP life policy before 2020, "your policy is insured by Resolution Life", and to contact Resolution Life directly or through its portal. Resolution Life New Zealand's number is 0800 808 267, open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. This is as at 20 October 2026.
That answers most searches for "AMP funeral insurance" and "AMP life insurance NZ phone number". The name on an old policy document is AMP, but the company that pays the claim and holds the premium is not. People find this out at a bad moment, when they are looking for a policy after a death. This page is a tracing guide: how to work out who is behind an older AMP policy, who to call, what is changing in 2027, and what to do before cancelling or replacing it.
Who is behind an old AMP policy
Three names get mixed up.
- AMP. On its life insurance page AMP says it partners with enable.me for "personalised, independent, tailored life insurance options" for new cover. It names no insurer for new policies (AMP: Life insurance). That page describes no funeral cover. It says only that a lump sum can help to "pay for funeral costs".
- AMP Wealth Management New Zealand Limited. AMP's footer names it as the issuer and manager of the AMP KiwiSaver Scheme. That is a savings product. It is not the company behind an AMP life policy.
- Resolution Life New Zealand. AMP's page says pre-2020 life policies are insured by it. The company's New Zealand arm is Resolution Life Australasia Limited (NZ Company No. 281363) and says it is "part of the Acenda Group, which is ultimately owned by Nippon Life" (Resolution Life NZ: About us).
We did not find a primary source for the date or mechanics of the transfer. AMP's page says only "purchased before 2020", so we use that wording and no more.
Is there an AMP funeral policy?
We found no current AMP or Resolution Life funeral insurance product, and Resolution Life's site is built around servicing existing policies. Our guide to old policies notes that older whole-of-life and endowment policies sold decades ago by AMP and National Mutual are now serviced by Resolution Life and are no longer sold to new customers. If you hold an old AMP policy, it may be one of those types rather than a funeral plan. We cannot tell you which from outside: the policy schedule says what it is, what it pays and which events it covers.

Source: Resolution Life NZ contact page (Resolution Life NZ: Contact us), read 20 October 2026. We found two overseas numbers listed that did not match each other, so we leave them out. If you are claiming on behalf of someone who has died, have the policy number, the death certificate and your own identification ready. We have not read a document list from Resolution Life, so ask what it needs when you call.
What is changing in 2027
Resolution Life says it is proposing a two-stage restructure. All of its New Zealand policyholders were expected to move into a dedicated New Zealand fund by 1 October 2026. In 2027 it proposes to transfer all New Zealand policies to Asteron Life, and from 2027 Resolution Life and Asteron Life are due to become Acenda Life. Both stages need regulator approval, so the dates are estimates (Resolution Life NZ: Statutory fund restructure). The company says your policy "will continue to be managed with the same care and commitment you've come to expect". On Resolution Life's description, the change is to the insurer and the fund that holds your policy, and it recommends keeping a record of the change with your policy documents.
We have not seen confirmation that the first stage has happened, and we cannot say what the 2027 change will do beyond what Resolution Life states. If you hold a legacy policy, watch for a letter and keep it. Our page on Asteron Life's funeral and life cover explains the insurer the policies may move to.
Before you cancel or replace an old policy
- Do not cancel first. The FMA says to keep the old policy running until the new one is in force (FMA: Insurance).
- Look for new waiting periods. A new funeral or guaranteed-acceptance policy has an early-death window. Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance pays only for accidental death in the first 24 months.
- Check what the old policy is worth to you. Older policies can carry features a new one cannot match. Get a licensed adviser to read it before changing anything.
- Add up premiums against the benefit. For any funeral-type cover, total premiums can exceed the sum paid.
- Tell someone it exists. Our guide to finding an old insurance policy covers how families trace one.
Modern funeral cover in New Zealand
If the real question is "what funeral cover can I buy now", the funeral insurance hub and the comparison of options set out the insurers that sell it, with entry ages and early-death windows. Our page on whether funeral insurance is worth it also covers saving instead.
Where Momentum Life fits
If an old AMP policy turns out not to be a funeral plan and you are looking for one now, Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance (issued by Momentum Life Limited, FSP472286) is one that is open to new applicants. The entry ages are 40 to 75, there are no health questions, and the benefit is $3,000 to $30,000 as you choose. The first 24 months are the catch: only an accidental death within 90 days of the accident is paid, at three times the benefit, and for any other death the premiums for that person are refunded instead. After that, death from any cause is paid. Premiums are level until the 89th birthday and can change for everyone on the plan on 30 days' notice. Total premiums can end up higher than the benefit, the benefit may not cover a whole funeral, and there is no terminal illness benefit. People over 75 cannot apply.
Where to get advice
The buttons on this page open Momentum Life's online application. They are for a new policy and have nothing to do with an old AMP one. For an older policy, call Resolution Life, or ask a licensed adviser to read it with you. QuoteHub is a Momentum Life partner and Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver may receive a commission if you buy a Momentum policy; see how we are paid. Adviser's view
We found no AMP funeral insurance product on sale. AMP's own page says life policies bought before 2020 are insured by Resolution Life, and that is where a claim or question goes. Resolution Life is proposing to move its New Zealand policies to Asteron Life in 2027, subject to regulator approval. Resolution Life says your policy will continue to be managed with the same care.
