How does AA Pet Insurance work?
Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name.
AA Pet Insurance is a single customisable pet insurance product distributed by the New Zealand Automobile Association (AA), underwritten by The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd (FSP480747) and administered as Hollard's claims agent by PetSure (Australia) Pty Ltd (AA Pet Insurance Policy Document, p.3, retrieved 17 September 2026). Cover pays a fixed 80% of eligible vet expenses once you have met your chosen excess of $0, $100, $250 or $500 per condition, per policy period, up to an annual benefit limit of $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 that you select at sign-up (same source, p.10 and p.21, retrieved 17 September 2026).

One customisable plan, not named tiers
Unlike insurers that sell Bronze, Silver or Gold-style tiers, AA Pet Insurance sells a single "Accident and Illness Cover" product that you customise by choosing the annual benefit limit and the excess (AA Pet Insurance Policy Document, Contents p.2 and p.10, retrieved 17 September 2026). Dental Illness and a combined Overseas Pet Travel and Emergency Boarding benefit are bundled automatically into every policy and draw on the same annual benefit limit; a Paw Care Package for preventive items is the one optional extra, at $100 a policy period (same source, pp.13-15). See how much is pet insurance in NZ and compare pet insurance NZ.
Waiting periods
Illness cover carries a 14-day wait, and accidental injury has no waiting period except for cruciate ligament conditions, which carry a 6-month wait from the start of your first policy period (AA Pet Insurance Policy Document, p.12, retrieved 17 September 2026). AA publishes a documented waiver: if your vet completes a Cruciate Ligament Examination Form within 14 days of examining your pet on or after the policy's start date, and AA agrees in writing, the 6-month wait can be lifted, "at our discretion" (same source, p.12). Dental illness carries its own separate 6-month wait (same source, p.13). Patella luxation, elbow dysplasia and hip dysplasia are excluded from accident cover by definition and fall under the standard 14-day illness wait instead (same source, p.11). See pet insurance waiting periods NZ.
Sub-limits inside the annual benefit limit
Several conditions and benefits draw on their own sub-limit inside the $5,000 to $15,000 annual benefit limit, all per policy period: cruciate ligament conditions at $3,200; a shared consultation-fee pool covering physical exams, recheck visits, referrals and after-hours consults at $300; dental illness at $600; emergency boarding at $1,500; and intervertebral disc disease at $4,000 (AA Pet Insurance Policy Document, p.10, retrieved 17 September 2026). The optional Paw Care Package is a separate $100-a-year pool covering 13 listed preventive items, paid at 100% with no excess (same source, p.15). Behavioural conditions and alternative or complementary therapies, including physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, are excluded outright rather than sub-limited (same source, p.19). See pet insurance annual limits and sub-limits NZ.
Pre-existing conditions
AA defines a pre-existing condition as one that first existed before your policy started, or during a waiting period, that you were or reasonably should have been aware of, extended to bilateral conditions on the opposite side of the body and to "related conditions" arising from the same disease process (AA Pet Insurance Policy Document, pp.6, 8, retrieved 17 September 2026). AA's own point of difference is a "temporary condition" pathway: if a pre-existing condition normally resolves with treatment and has not shown symptoms for 18 months before a claim, it stops being excluded, unless it is cruciate ligament disease, IVDD, hip or elbow dysplasia, patella luxation, an endocrine disease or another chronic condition (same source, p.18). See pre-existing conditions and pet insurance NZ.
Dental cover
Dental illness, covering scaling, polishing, dental x-rays and tooth removal for named conditions such as gingivitis and abscesses, is bundled automatically into every policy at the standard 80% benefit percentage, up to the $600 sub-limit, after the 6-month dental wait (AA Pet Insurance Policy Document, p.13, retrieved 17 September 2026). Orthodontic treatment, crowns, root canal and cosmetic dental work are excluded, and only traumatic tooth fractures qualify under accident cover, not disease-caused ones (same source, pp.11, 13). See does pet insurance cover dental in NZ.
Desexing and vaccination
Desexing and vaccinations sit outside core Accident and Illness Cover as routine or preventive items (AA Pet Insurance Policy Document, pp.18-19, retrieved 17 September 2026). Both are reachable only through the optional Paw Care Package, alongside microchipping and flea, tick and worm control, inside the shared $100-a-year pool (same source, p.15). See does pet insurance cover desexing and vaccinations in NZ.
Direct-to-vet payment: GapOnly
AA's policy document describes reimbursement as the standard model: you pay the vet, then claim back up to 80% (AA Pet Insurance Policy Document, p.4, retrieved 17 September 2026). A separate feature called GapOnly lets you settle "on the spot," paying only the gap between the invoice and the benefit AA pays, but it is only available on eligible claims "at participating vets," not at every NZ clinic (main pet insurance page, retrieved 17 September 2026). See pet insurance that pays the vet directly in NZ.
Claims, age limits and discounts
Claims are lodged by uploading an itemised invoice, payment receipt and consultation notes through the Pet Portal (AA Pet Insurance Policy Document, p.22, retrieved 17 September 2026); AA does not publish a standard claims-processing turnaround, only an unquantified "processed quickly" on its main page (main pet insurance page, retrieved 17 September 2026). New policies can start from 8 weeks of age up to a pet's 9th birthday, with no separate age rule for dogs versus cats, and AA states it will "offer renewal of your policy every year for so long as we continue to provide this product" (AA Pet Insurance Policy Document, pp.10, 16). A 10% multi-pet discount applies to additional pets, and a 5% AA member discount applies on new policies with a valid membership number (main pet insurance page; terms and conditions page, both retrieved 17 September 2026). See pet insurance age limits NZ and multi-pet insurance discounts NZ.
Questions people ask
Who underwrites AA Pet Insurance?
Hollard underwrites the policy, FSP480747; PetSure administers claims as Hollard's agent, and the AA distributes the product (AA Pet Insurance Policy Document, p.3, retrieved 17 September 2026).
Does AA Pet Insurance offer different tiers like Bronze or Gold?
No. It sells one customisable plan, and you set the annual benefit limit and excess yourself rather than picking a named tier (same source, p.10). See how AA compares with Southern Cross Pet.
Can AA pay the vet directly?
Its policy document describes reimbursement as the standard model, but GapOnly lets you pay only the gap at participating clinics, with the claim assessed while you are still there (main pet insurance page, retrieved 17 September 2026).
The adviser's view
AA Pet Insurance's single customisable plan and fixed 80% benefit percentage are simpler to compare than a tiered product, but the fixed percentage means you cannot trade a lower payout rate for a lower premium the way some tiered insurers let you.
