What Southern Cross Pet Insurance actually covers, plan by plan
Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name.
Southern Cross Pet Insurance Limited is New Zealand's largest pet insurer by disclosed scale: more than 65,000 pets insured, $30.2 million paid across 78,649 claims in the 2025 calendar year, and an average claim of $404 for dogs and $310 for cats (1News, 26 July 2026). It is a separate company from Southern Cross Health Society, the health insurer, though it offers Health Society members a 2.5% discount and carries its own "A (Strong)" financial strength rating from Standard & Poor's (PetCare Policy Document, pp.3, 31, retrieved 17 September 2026). It sells three products: PetCare (illness and accident cover across four Ribbon tiers), AcciPet (accident-only) and FreeCover (a free six-week bridge for puppies and kittens).
PetCare, AcciPet and FreeCover
| Plan | What it covers | Annual limit | Entry age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Illness and accidental injury, plus optional extras | $2,500–$15,000 across four Ribbon tiers | 8 weeks to under 7 years | |
| Accidental injury only; no illness, day-to-day or dental cover | Fixed $5,000 | 8 weeks, no maximum | |
| Free, non-renewing 6-week bridge for new pets | $2,000 | 6 to under 26 weeks |

PetCare's four tiers each set their own cruciate ligament sub-limit: BlueRibbon $15,000 limit / $5,000 sub-limit, GoldRibbon $10,000 / $5,000, SilverRibbon $5,000 / $2,500, BronzeRibbon $2,500 / $2,500. AcciPet has a flat $2,500 cruciate sub-limit inside its $5,000 limit; patella luxation has no separately named sub-limit in either document and is capped only by the plan's general limit (PetCare Policy Document, pp.8, 28; AcciPet Policy Document, p.8). See pet insurance annual limits and sub-limits NZ.
Excess and co-payment
PetCare and AcciPet share a selectable $100, $250 or $500 excess and a 10%, 20% or 30% co-payment. The excess is deducted once per policy year, not per claim: "once we've deducted this from claims you make, there will be no more excess payable for the rest of your policy year" (Questions (FAQ) page, retrieved 17 September 2026). FreeCover instead charges a fixed $100 excess per health condition, with no percentage co-payment on top. Optional extras carry their own fixed co-payments regardless of the base plan: 20% on consult care extra and dental care extra, none on day-to-day care extra (PetCare Policy Document, p.11). See pet insurance excess explained NZ.
Waiting periods
| Cover | PetCare | AcciPet | FreeCover |
|---|---|---|---|
| Illness | 21 days | Not applicable | 5 days |
| Cruciate / patella | 90 days | 90 days | Excluded outright |
| Dental care extra | 90 days | Not offered | Not offered |
Source: PetCare Policy Document, p.16; AcciPet Policy Document, p.14; FreeCover Policy Document, pp.13, 15, 21. Holding FreeCover for 21+ days first waives PetCare/AcciPet's illness and cruciate/patella stand-downs, though not the 90-day dental care extra wait. See pet insurance waiting periods NZ and cruciate ligament surgery cost for dogs NZ.
Pet Easy-Claim: does it pay the vet directly?
Only through one channel. Vets in the Pet Easy-Claim network "can claim on your behalf, so we pay them directly and you only cover the remaining balance" (Questions (FAQ) page). Outside that network, cover is reimbursement-only: "We will pay claims to you, not to your vet, unless we agree otherwise" (PetCare Policy Document, p.24, retrieved 17 September 2026). Check whether your own vet is actually a Pet Easy-Claim provider first. See pet insurance that pays the vet directly NZ.
Dental, desexing and vaccination
Base cover on both plans includes dental treatment caused by an accidental injury, but excludes dental disease, cleaning, scaling and orthodontics (PetCare Policy Document, pp.7, 19). The optional dental care extra, PetCare only, reimburses 80% of gingivitis treatment, abscesses, scaling and medically necessary extractions, to $300 a policy period, after a 90-day wait (PetCare Policy Document, p.13). Desexing and vaccinations sit outside base cover as "everyday care," reachable only through PetCare's day-to-day care extra: up to $75 per treatment, $300 a policy period, no co-payment (PetCare Policy Document, pp.11, 13, 20). AcciPet offers neither extra. See does pet insurance cover dental NZ and does pet insurance cover desexing and vaccinations NZ.
Age limits, pre-existing conditions and discounts
PetCare and AcciPet need the pet to be 8 weeks or older (6 weeks for FreeCover). PetCare caps new enrolment at under 7 years; AcciPet has no stated maximum; FreeCover must start before 26 weeks (PetCare Policy Document, p.6). An existing policyholder isn't cut off at 7: "We don't cancel your pet's insurance when your pet gets older... you can keep their cover for your pet's entire lifetime," provided the policy started before age 7 (Questions (FAQ) page). Both plans apply a bilateral clause: a condition already affecting one knee or ear is treated as pre-existing on the matching side too, even if it only appears there later (PetCare Policy Document, pp.14-15). Three discounts stack: 5% per additional pet, 2.5% for Health Society members, 2.5% for direct debit (PetCare Policy Document, p.31). See pet insurance age limits NZ, pre-existing conditions and pet insurance NZ and multi-pet insurance discounts NZ.
How to make a claim
Claims go in online at southerncrosspet.co.nz/make-a-claim, or by post, with your policy number, treatment details, tax invoices and your vet's diagnosis and treatment records (PetCare Policy Document, pp.23-24). Turnaround, stated on the FAQ page rather than the policy documents, is fastest through Pet Easy-Claim: claims of $250 or less are assessed "straightaway between 7am and 7pm, every day," larger ones "within 30 minutes" in business hours. A self-submitted claim is paid "within an average of 3 working days" (Questions (FAQ) page, retrieved 17 September 2026). Payment goes to the policyholder, not the vet, unless routed through Pet Easy-Claim. See how to claim pet insurance NZ.
Regulatory standing
Southern Cross Pet Insurance Limited holds its own licence, FSP707751, on the FMA's public register, and has run a CoFI Fair Conduct Programme since 31 March 2025 (FMA licensed providers, retrieved 17 September 2026), that number appears on none of its own current policy documents or web pages. The FMA formally warned the insurer on 26 March 2024 for a fair-dealing breach involving a misapplied discount (FMA media release, 26 March 2024). It belongs to the IFSO dispute resolution scheme, but is not listed among the Insurance Council's Fair Insurance Code members (ICNZ members, retrieved 17 September 2026). A licensed adviser can't change what these documents say, but can read them against your own pet's age, breed and history and flag which wait or sub-limit is likely to matter. Adviser's view
QuoteHub's read is that Southern Cross Pet Insurance publishes an unusually detailed policy wording, but its own current documents don't print the insurer's FSP number, and its 2024 FMA warning is worth knowing before you rely on its marketing pages alone.
