How does Petcover NZ pet insurance actually work?
Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name.
Petcover NZ sells nine named pet insurance plans grouped into three product families, Superior, Mid-Range and Safety-net, with vet-fee cover running from $5,000 up to $20,000 for dogs and $15,000 for cats, underwritten by Provident Insurance Corporation Limited (NZBN 9429030676497, FSP270065), a Reserve Bank-regulated NZ insurer with an AM Best Financial Strength Rating of B+ (Good) (Superior PDS; AM Best, 9 December 2025, both retrieved 17 September 2026). Petcover NZ Limited (FSP614229) is the policy's binding agent, not the insurer, "authorised by the Insurer to issue, vary and dispose of this Insurance and to manage and settle claims" (Superior PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). This page compares what Petcover publishes about its own plans against QuoteHub's full seven-insurer comparison.
Three families, nine plans, one confusing name
Petcover's naming is worth reading before comparing quotes. "Superior" is both the top product family's name and the name of its highest individual sub-tier, so a quote for "Superior" and a quote for the "Superior family" are not automatically the same thing.
| Family | Sub-tiers | Vet fees, dogs | Vet fees, cats | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Superior | Entry, Mid-Point, Superior | $10,000 / $15,000 / $20,000 | $9,000 / $10,000 / $15,000 | Superior PDS |
| Mid-Range | Core, Vital, Key | $5,000 / $10,000 / $15,000 | Same figures, no dog/cat split | Mid-Range PDS |
| Safety-net | Economy, Catastrophe 1, Catastrophe 2 | $7,000 / $5,000 / $10,000 | Same figures, no dog/cat split | Economy PDS, Catastrophe PDS |
All sources retrieved 17 September 2026. QuoteHub does not sell these policies on this page. Its licensed advisers may receive commission from an insurer if you take out cover through them.
On Entry and Mid-Point (the two lower Superior sub-tiers), several benefits including Death from Illness and Theft/Straying are an "Optional Extra Benefit" rather than automatic; they are only bundled in as standard on the top Superior sub-tier itself (Superior PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). See annual limits and sub-limits explained for how a headline figure like $20,000 interacts with the smaller caps sitting inside it.
Excess, co-payment and the age contribution
Petcover's PDS describes a three-part excess mechanism on every plan: a Fixed Excess per unrelated condition, an optional Pet % Share Excess taken as a percentage of the claim, and an Age Contribution once a pet passes a set age (Superior PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). Only Mid-Range (Core, Vital, Key) publishes a fixed selectable menu: excess of $0, $100 or $200, and a co-payment of 10%, 20% or 30% (Mid-Range PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). Superior and Economy give a worked example only ("Fixed Excess $175... Optional Pet % Share Excess 25%") rather than a published menu, and Catastrophe 1 and 2 publish two fixed choices, $450 or $900, with a flat 100% reimbursement rate on eligible fees for pets under 8 (Catastrophe PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026).
The Age Contribution applies across Superior, Economy and Catastrophe: 20% once a standard-breed dog or cat turns 8 (4 for a select breed), rising to 35% at 10 (7 for a select breed) (Superior PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026; Make a Claim FAQ, retrieved 17 September 2026). The PDS calls it an "additional" contribution rather than a replacement for the base excess or co-payment, so QuoteHub treats it here as stacking on top, though no single worked example in the PDS shows the combined figure. See pet insurance excess explained for how this compares with the other six insurers.
Waiting periods
Petcover's own comparison table and PDS agree: accidental injury has no waiting period on any of the nine plans, but illness does, 21 days on Superior and Economy, 28 days on Mid-Range, and 30 days on Catastrophe 1 and 2 (Dog Insurance page, retrieved 17 September 2026). Cruciate ligament disease carries its own extended 180-day wait on Mid-Range and Catastrophe only; the Superior and Economy PDS documents fall back to the standard illness wait for cruciate claims, with no separately named extension found in either. Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome carries a 365-day exclusion window on every plan (Mid-Range PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). Luxating patella, cruciate rupture, hip dysplasia and hyperextending hocks are excluded from Petcover's definition of "Accident" across all four PDS documents, pushing them onto the illness-length wait instead of immediate accident cover. See pet insurance waiting periods and cruciate ligament surgery cost.
Pre-existing conditions and renewal
A condition that existed, or first showed clinical signs, before cover started or during the waiting period is permanently excluded; Petcover's PDS states this "will never be covered by Your insurance" (Superior PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). A bilateral-body-part clause means a condition affecting one knee, ear or eye before cover started excludes the matching part on the other side too. A temporary exclusion may be lifted "following underwriting review," but the PDS commits to no fixed timeframe; Petcover's own website gives two different figures in two articles, 12 months in one and up to two years in the other, which QuoteHub flags as a discrepancy rather than a settled rule. Six of the nine plans (Superior, Mid-Range and Catastrophe families) are sold as "Umbrella for Life," covering an ongoing condition for the pet's lifetime provided the policy renews without a break; Economy is the exception, capping cover for any single condition at 12 months even with continuous renewal (Economy PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). See pre-existing conditions and lifetime vs annual pet insurance.
Direct-to-vet payment and claims
Petcover publishes 93% of claims paid out for June 2023 to March 2024, and states "9 out of 10 claims are paid within just 3 days," both current on its homepage (Homepage, retrieved 17 September 2026); the 3-day figure does not appear on the separate Make a Claim page. Paying the vet directly is opt-in, not default: "this option is only available if all parties involved consent to it," and the PDS reserves Petcover's right to decline (Make a Claim page; Superior PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). Claims go in online, by email or by post; pre-approval is not offered. See how to claim pet insurance and pet insurance that pays the vet directly.
Questions people ask
Is Petcover the same company as Petplan NZ?
Petcover NZ Limited absorbed the Petplan NZ book of business, according to its own press release dated 13 October 2021 (Petcover press release, retrieved 17 September 2026). Petplan NZ does not operate as a separate insurer today.
Who actually underwrites Petcover's policies?
Provident Insurance Corporation Limited (FSP270065), regulated by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, with a current AM Best Financial Strength Rating of B+ (Good) (Superior PDS; AM Best, 9 December 2025, both retrieved 17 September 2026). Petcover NZ Limited (FSP614229) administers the policy and settles claims as the insurer's binding agent, not as your own agent.
Does every Petcover plan cover dental and desexing?
No. Routine dental work and desexing are excluded from core cover on all nine plans. A $50-a-year contribution toward teeth cleaning or de-sexing is only available via the optional "Day to Day Care" benefit on a Mid-Range plan (Mid-Range PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). See does pet insurance cover dental and does pet insurance cover desexing and vaccinations.
Is there a multi-pet discount?
A discount exists for 3 or more eligible pets, but Petcover does not publish the percentage anywhere in its PDS documents or website (Superior PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). See multi-pet insurance discounts for what other insurers publish.

Adviser's view
QuoteHub's read is that Petcover's nine-plan structure gives real choice on price and depth of cover, but the same name (Superior) doubles as a family and a top sub-tier, so the plan on a quote is worth checking against the PDS before comparing it with another insurer.
