How do Southern Cross Pet and Petcover's policies actually differ?

Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name.

Southern Cross Pet sells one accident-and-illness structure, PetCare, with a chosen annual benefit limit of $2,500 to $15,000, a selectable $100/$250/$500 excess and a 10%/20%/30% co-payment on every claim (PetCare Policy Document, pp.8-10, retrieved 17 September 2026). Petcover sells three separate product families instead: Superior pays up to $20,000 for dogs, Mid-Range Key pays up to $15,000 with a selectable $0/$100/$200 excess, and Safety-net Economy caps a single ongoing condition's claims at 12 months even if you keep renewing (Superior PDS; Mid-Range PDS; Economy PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). The plan names alone don't say what you're comparing, so the tables below work from each insurer's own current wording.

Underwriter and product range

Southern Cross Pet Insurance Limited is distinct from Southern Cross Health Society, carries an A (Strong) S&P rating, and doesn't publish its own FSP number on any document checked (PetCare Policy Document, p.3, retrieved 17 September 2026). Petcover's actual insurer is Provident Insurance Corporation Limited (FSP270065); Petcover NZ Limited (FSP614229) is the binding agent that administers the policy (Superior PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026).

Excess, co-payment and annual limits

Southern Cross's PetCare excess is annual, not per claim: once the chosen $100/$250/$500 has been deducted from claims in a policy year, no further excess applies for the rest of that year (Questions page, retrieved 17 September 2026). Petcover's excess mechanism is less transparent outside Mid-Range: its PDS defines a Fixed Excess plus an optional Pet % Share Excess plus an Age Contribution loading, but only the Mid-Range family (Core, Vital, Key) publishes a fixed menu, $0/$100/$200 excess and 10%/20%/30% co-payment. Superior, Economy and Catastrophe give a worked example only ($175 fixed excess, a 25% share illustration), with the real figure set on the individual Certificate of Insurance (Superior PDS; Mid-Range PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). The PDS calls the Age Contribution "additional," so we've treated it as adding to the Fixed Excess, not replacing it: 20% once a standard-breed dog or cat turns 8, 35% at 10 (4 and 7 for Select Breeds) (Superior PDS; Make a Claim page, retrieved 17 September 2026).

Waiting periods

Petcover's headline claim is that accidental injury has no wait at all, with illness sitting behind a 21, 28 or 30-day wait depending on the family (Dog Insurance page, retrieved 17 September 2026). But its PDS states that luxating patella, cruciate rupture or strain, degenerative joint disease, hip dysplasia and hyperextending hocks are "not considered Accidents," pushing those onto the longer illness wait despite often being injury-caused (Superior PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). Southern Cross's accidental injury cover is claimable from day one, with a flat 90-day wait specifically for cruciate ligament and patella luxation on both PetCare and AcciPet (AcciPet Policy Document, p.14, retrieved 17 September 2026).

Insurer Illness wait Cruciate / patella wait Injury wait
Petcover Superior / Economy 21 days Not named; falls to the 21-day illness wait None
Petcover Mid-Range 28 days 180 days, named None
Petcover Catastrophe 30 days 180 days, named None
Southern Cross Pet 21 days (PetCare; AcciPet has no illness cover) 90 days None

Pre-existing conditions and renewal continuity

Both write a bilateral-condition clause: a pre-existing condition on one of a paired body part (eyes, ears, knees) excludes the same condition on the other side even if it only shows up later (PetCare Policy Document, p.15; Superior PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). Neither PDS commits to a fixed symptom-free period after which an exclusion is reconsidered: Southern Cross's path is diagnosis-based, and Petcover's PDS says only an exclusion "may be lifted following underwriting review," no timeframe stated. Petcover's website separately gives two conflicting figures, 12 months in one article, up to two years in another, that don't appear in the PDS itself (Pre-existing conditions article; What does dog insurance cover? article, retrieved 17 September 2026). See pre-existing conditions and pet insurance NZ.

Renewal continuity is where the two diverge most. Southern Cross's annual limit simply resets every policy period for as long as the policy runs unbroken, with no lifetime dollar cap on a single condition (PetCare Policy Document, p.9, retrieved 17 September 2026). Petcover calls this "Umbrella for Life" and applies it to six of its nine plans, each with a lifetime-claims review threshold ($36,000 Superior/Mid-Range, $15,000 Catastrophe), but Safety-net Economy is explicitly "Umbrella for Life, No," capping any single condition at 12 months of claims even with continuous renewal (Economy PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). See lifetime vs annual pet insurance NZ.

Dental, desexing and vaccination cover

Both cover accident-caused dental injury under base cover and exclude routine dental from it. Southern Cross's optional PetCare-only "dental care extra" reimburses 80% up to $300 per period after a 90-day wait, covering gingivitis, abscesses and scale-and-polish (PetCare Policy Document, p.13, retrieved 17 September 2026). Petcover's is narrower and conditional: accident dental needs up-to-date annual check-ups, and teeth-cleaning is one of ten items picked under the Mid-Range "Day to Day Care" extra, sharing a combined $50 annual benefit (Make a Claim page; Mid-Range PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). Desexing and vaccination are excluded from base cover on both. Southern Cross's PetCare-only "day-to-day care extra" pays up to $75 per treatment (capped at $300 per period, no co-payment) for de-sexing, vaccinations and health checks (PetCare Policy Document, pp.11-13, retrieved 17 September 2026). Petcover's equivalent, again Mid-Range only, shares the same $50 benefit across de-sexing and eight other items (Mid-Range PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026). See does pet insurance cover dental NZ.

Direct-to-vet payment and multi-pet discounts

Neither pays every vet directly by default. Southern Cross pays at the point of care only through its Pet Easy-Claim network; outside that, claims are reimbursed to the policyholder (Questions page, retrieved 17 September 2026). Petcover's "Pay Direct to Vet" is opt-in, needs the vet's prior agreement, and its Superior PDS reserves the right to decline it (Superior PDS; Make a Claim page, retrieved 17 September 2026). Southern Cross publishes an exact multi-pet figure, 5% per additional pet, stacking with a 2.5% Health Society discount and a 2.5% direct-debit discount (PetCare Policy Document, p.31, retrieved 17 September 2026). Petcover's PDS documents list a "Multi-pet Discount (3+ eligible pets)" line but never disclose the percentage. See pet insurance that pays the vet directly NZ and multi-pet insurance discounts NZ.

Questions people ask

Which insurer has the higher annual limit?

At the top, Petcover's Superior plan reaches $20,000 for dogs and $15,000 for cats, above Southern Cross PetCare's top BlueRibbon tier of $15,000 for either species (Superior PDS; PetCare Policy Document, p.8, retrieved 17 September 2026). At entry level it flips: Southern Cross's lowest PetCare tier is $2,500, below Petcover's lowest entry-level limit of $5,000 (Mid-Range Core or Catastrophe 1) (Mid-Range PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026).

Does either insurer offer free cover for a new puppy or kitten?

Southern Cross does: FreeCover is a genuinely free, no-premium policy giving up to $2,000 of cover for a puppy or kitten's first 6 weeks, with a $100 excess per health condition and no co-payment (FreeCover Policy Document, pp.4, 8, retrieved 17 September 2026). Petcover has no equivalent free introductory product.

Is Petcover's Economy plan the same shape as Southern Cross's AcciPet?

No. AcciPet has no illness cover at all, but any accidental injury it does cover carries the same open-ended renewal as PetCare (AcciPet Benefit Sheet, retrieved 17 September 2026). Petcover's Economy plan covers accident and illness up to $7,000, but caps any single ongoing condition at 12 months of claims regardless of renewal (Economy PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026), the two restrict cover in different ways, not the same way.

Adviser's view

QuoteHub's read is that the plan names tell you almost nothing here; Petcover's own wording changes shape three times across its nine plans, and Southern Cross's single structure hides a 90-day cruciate wait the marketing page doesn't mention.
