How much does an emergency or after-hours vet cost in NZ?

Christchurch and Hamilton: named clinics that do not publish a fee
Christchurch's after-hours pet emergencies are handled by the After Hours Veterinary Clinic in Addington (03 366 1052), used by referral from clinics including Avonhead Vets; its own site lists opening hours (weeknights from 7pm, weekends and public holidays around the clock) but no consultation fee, so pricing is confirmed by phone (After Hours Vets, Christchurch, retrieved 17 September 2026). Hamilton's equivalent is the Waikato After Hours Veterinary Hospital on Anglesea Street, open weeknights from 6pm and all weekend; its FAQ page states only that "it is not always possible to give you an exact quote for your pet's treatment so we will give you an estimate range," with a deposit covering the lower end of that range due before treatment starts (Waikato After Hours Veterinary Hospital, retrieved 17 September 2026).
Why an emergency bill runs higher than a routine visit
An emergency consult fee is only the starting line.
