How much does pet euthanasia and cremation cost in NZ?

What NZ providers charge for euthanasia and cremation

These are home-visit (in-home) providers, now a common way NZ pet owners choose to say goodbye; ask your own vet clinic for its in-clinic price, which is not published by every practice. Cremation is usually billed separately from the euthanasia procedure.

Across these named providers, cremation typically adds roughly $150 to $400 on top of the euthanasia fee, rising with the pet's size, plus optional extras such as a wooden ashes box ($120 at Vet2U) or a paw print keepsake (Vet2U services, retrieved 17 September 2026).

Which pet insurers put anything toward it

Most of the seven main NZ pet insurers either exclude euthanasia and cremation costs outright or simply do not publish a position on them. Two put a specific dollar figure toward some or all of it, on some of their plans. This table lists what each insurer's own policy wording says, in alphabetical order.

What this means in practice

Read the wording, not just the benefit's name. PD Insurance is the only insurer here that names euthanasia itself as a covered event, and only when it is "non-elective", no separate dollar limit is published beyond the plan's general benefit limit. Petcover's $300 Saying Goodbye benefit and AA's $100 Paw Care pool are fixed figures that will not stretch to cover every price in the tables above, particularly a large-dog cremation. Tower's $100 Funeral Costs benefit is a post-death cremation/burial payment only, not a substitute for the euthanasia fee it excludes.

Petcover's Age Contribution (an extra co-payment percentage on older pets, on some plans) is not stated in its PDS as additive to or replacing the base co-payment; this page treats it as additive, matching the PDS's wording that it is an "additional... Age Contribution," but check Petcover's own dog insurance page for a specific pet before relying on it.

If cover for end-of-life costs matters to you, work out roughly what a vet bill costs in the lead-up using the vet costs guide or the emergency vet cost guide, and check whether a policy pays the vet directly or reimburses you afterward, since that affects cash flow at a difficult time. Does pet insurance ever cover euthanasia?

Sometimes, but rarely as a standalone named benefit. PD Insurance covers non-elective euthanasia on all three of its plans with no separate published sub-limit. The other six insurers in this comparison either exclude it outright (Tower, for "non-essential" euthanasia) or do not mention it in their policy wording at all (AA, Cove, SPCA, Southern Cross, Petcover).

Is cremation covered by pet insurance in NZ?

Only on some plans, and usually with a small cap. Petcover's Mid-Range plans pay up to $300 toward being put to sleep and cremated or buried. AA's optional Paw Care Package includes cremation or burial inside a shared $100 pool with 12 other items. Tower pays up to $100 in Funeral Costs toward cremation or burial (not the euthanasia itself). Southern Cross covers it only via PetCare's optional day-to-day care extra, up to $75 per treatment. Does pet insurance pay for cremation and burial both?
