What pushes the price above the standard fee

Every clinic above charges more for a longer or less convenient appointment than the standard consult. New Plymouth Vet Group's Urgent Consult is $110.00 against its $78.50 Regular Consult, and its Convenience Appointment (weekday evenings and Sunday) is $98.50 (New Plymouth Vet Group, retrieved 17 September 2026). VivaVets charges $120 for a first, extended 45-minute appointment against $85 for a standard 30-minute return visit (VivaVets, retrieved 17 September 2026). Not every clinic loads after-hours visits, though: Long Bay Vet states "after hours care, standard hours pricing" applies, with no surcharge (Long Bay Vet, retrieved 17 September 2026). Does pet insurance cover a routine vet visit?

Accident and illness pet insurance is built to pay toward the cost of treating an unexpected injury or illness, not a routine or preventive check-up. Most policies explicitly exclude "routine care", health checks, vaccinations and the like, from core cover. Separately from that exclusion, several insurers set a specific dollar limit on the consultation fee itself when a consult is part of a covered claim.
