How much does a vet visit cost in New Zealand?
Financial advice is provided by Craig Smith Business Services Limited, trading as Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver, a licensed Financial Advice Provider (FSP712931). QuoteHub is a trading name.
A standard vet consultation at a New Zealand clinic that publishes its prices costs $77 to $120, with most clinics in the $77 to $85 band for a routine check-up on a healthy dog or cat (Long Bay Vet, Auckland, retrieved 17 September 2026; Glenfield Veterinary Clinic, Auckland, retrieved 17 September 2026; VivaVets, Takapuna, retrieved 17 September 2026; New Plymouth Vet Group, retrieved 17 September 2026). Vet fees in New Zealand are unregulated, and most clinics do not publish a price list at all, so this range comes only from the handful that do.
What a standard vet visit costs
These are the exact consultation fees each clinic below currently publishes on its own website. They are anchor points for budgeting, not a quote for your pet, and prices vary by clinic, region and how long the appointment runs.
| Clinic | Location | Standard consultation | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long Bay Vet | Long Bay, Auckland | $77.00, no after-hours surcharge | Prices page, retrieved 17 September 2026 |
| Glenfield Veterinary Clinic | Glenfield, Auckland | $78 (vet consultation), $45 (nurse consultation) | Services page, retrieved 17 September 2026 |
| New Plymouth Vet Group | New Plymouth | $78.50 (regular consult, 1 pet) | Price estimates page, retrieved 17 September 2026 |
| VivaVets | Takapuna, Auckland | $85 (standard, return visit) / $120 (initial, new client, 45 min) | Pricing page, retrieved 17 September 2026 |
What pushes the price above the standard fee
Every clinic above charges more for a longer or less convenient appointment than the standard consult. New Plymouth Vet Group's Urgent Consult is $110.00 against its $78.50 Regular Consult, and its Convenience Appointment (weekday evenings and Sunday) is $98.50 (New Plymouth Vet Group, retrieved 17 September 2026). VivaVets charges $120 for a first, extended 45-minute appointment against $85 for a standard 30-minute return visit (VivaVets, retrieved 17 September 2026). Not every clinic loads after-hours visits, though: Long Bay Vet states "after hours care, standard hours pricing" applies, with no surcharge (Long Bay Vet, retrieved 17 September 2026). A genuine emergency, out-of-hours callout is its own cost bracket again; see emergency vet costs in NZ for that. Glenfield Veterinary Clinic also shows a cheaper nurse consultation ($45) alongside its vet consultation ($78) for lower-acuity visits such as a weight check or a vaccination-only appointment (Glenfield Veterinary Clinic, retrieved 17 September 2026). For a wider set of NZ procedure prices beyond the consult fee itself, see vet costs in NZ, and for clinics and schemes aimed specifically at keeping the bill down, see low-cost vet options in NZ.
Does pet insurance cover a routine vet visit?
Accident and illness pet insurance is built to pay toward the cost of treating an unexpected injury or illness, not a routine or preventive check-up. Most policies explicitly exclude "routine care", health checks, vaccinations and the like, from core cover. Separately from that exclusion, several insurers set a specific dollar limit on the consultation fee itself when a consult is part of a covered claim. The table below compares how each insurer treats consultation fees; insurers are listed alphabetically, not ranked.
| Insurer | How it treats a consultation fee | Source |
|---|---|---|
AA Pet Insurance |
Consultation fees (including physical exams, rechecks and referral visits tied to a covered claim) are paid from a shared $300-per-policy-period pool. Routine health checks and vaccinations are excluded from core cover, though the optional Paw Care Package is a separate $100-per-period pool for preventive items. | AA Pet Insurance Policy Document, p.10, 15, 18, retrieved 17 September 2026 |
Cove Insurance |
Not published. No standalone consultation-fee sub-limit or routine-care detail was found on Cove's pet insurance pages. | Cove Insurance pet insurance page, retrieved 17 September 2026 |
PD Insurance |
Pays up to $80.00 toward a consultation between 9am and 5pm on weekdays tied to a covered claim, or up to $200.00 for a specialist consultation, house call, or a consultation outside those hours. Routine health checks are excluded. | PD NZ Pet Insurance Policy Wording (PDF), retrieved 17 September 2026 |
| Mid-Range and Catastrophe plans set a separate "Vet Consults" sub-limit of up to $400 per policy year; Superior and Economy plans fold consultation fees into the main Vet Fees limit instead of a standalone cap. Routine or preventive consults are excluded from core cover on every plan. | Mid-Range PDS, retrieved 17 September 2026 | |
| Everyday Cover pays up to $300 per policy period toward consultation fees; The Works Cover up to $500 per policy period. Big Stuff Cover does not publish a separate consultation-fee sub-limit. Routine consultations are excluded from all three tiers. | Everyday Cover and The Works Cover policy documents, p.7, 9, retrieved 17 September 2026 | |
| Base PetCare and AcciPet cover has no standalone consultation-fee benefit. The optional Consult care extra reimburses consultation fees up to $1,000 per policy period at 80% (a fixed 20% co-payment applies to this extra). | PetCare Policy Document, p.12, retrieved 17 September 2026 | |
| No standalone consultation-fee sub-limit is published. A consultation tied to a covered claim is paid from the general injury, illness or policy-aggregate limit instead. The Comprehensive Plan's small routine-care allowance ($100 per year, max 2 claims of $50) is separate from this. | Comprehensive & Essentials Policy Wording, retrieved 17 September 2026 |

Questions people ask
Is a nurse consultation cheaper than a vet consultation?
At Glenfield Veterinary Clinic, yes: a nurse consultation is $45 against $78 for a veterinary consultation, and the clinic offers nurse-led vaccination appointments as a lower-cost alternative to a full vet consult (Glenfield Veterinary Clinic, retrieved 17 September 2026). Whether a nurse consult is appropriate depends on what your pet needs, so ask the clinic when you book.
Does an urgent or after-hours visit cost more than a standard consult?
At New Plymouth Vet Group, an Urgent Consult is $110.00 against a $78.50 Regular Consult (New Plymouth Vet Group, retrieved 17 September 2026), but pricing varies by clinic: Long Bay Vet states it charges standard-hours pricing with no after-hours surcharge (Long Bay Vet, retrieved 17 September 2026). For an actual after-hours emergency, see emergency vet costs in NZ, which is a separate cost bracket again.
Will pet insurance pay for a routine check-up?
Generally no. Every insurer compared above excludes routine or preventive consultations from its core accident and illness cover; some, such as AA Pet Insurance and Petcover, offer a small optional extra that can go toward preventive items instead. What several insurers do pay toward is the consultation fee attached to a claim for a covered accident or illness, up to that insurer's own published limit, as set out in the table above.
How much of a vet bill would I actually pay after excess and co-payment?
That depends on the size of the bill, your chosen excess and each insurer's co-payment structure, which differ between insurers; see how pet insurance excess works in NZ for how the two combine, or run a real bill through the vet bill calculator to see the result under each insurer's published terms.
Does pet insurance pay the vet directly, or do I pay the consultation fee upfront?
This varies by insurer and is covered on its own page: see pet insurance that pays the vet directly in NZ.
