How much does a dog x-ray, ultrasound or MRI cost in New Zealand?

None of New Zealand's specialist pet imaging providers publish a set price for a dog x-ray, ultrasound, CT or MRI scan. ARC Vets, Veterinary Specialists Aotearoa (VSA) and Rangiora Vet Centre, three clinics offering CT or MRI scanning for pets, all direct owners to contact them for an estimate rather than listing a price (ARC Vets, VSA Imaging and Rangiora Vet Centre CT Scanning, all retrieved 17 September 2026). Why imaging prices aren't published upfront
A consultation fee is easy to quote because it's the same procedure every time (see what a vet visit costs in NZ). Imaging isn't, for reasons clinics themselves give:
- The number of views changes the bill. One leg versus a full-body series is a different job, priced accordingly rather than as one flat figure.
- Most dogs need sedation to hold still. Normanby Road Vet Clinic in Auckland: "we must sedate your pet while an x-ray is performed, unless there are medical reasons where this isn't advisable" (Normanby Road Vet Clinic, retrieved 17 September 2026), that sedation or anaesthetic is billed on top of the imaging.
- CT and MRI are a referral procedure, not an in-clinic one. VSA describes "two registered Specialists in Diagnostic Imaging" who perform and interpret "radiographs (x-rays), ultrasound and advanced imaging such as CT and MRI scanning", an add-on most general practices don't offer (VSA Imaging, retrieved 17 September 2026).

What's actually published
Where a general-practice clinic does publish an imaging figure, it's usually a dental x-ray taken alongside a scale, polish or extraction, Barkes Corner & Brookfield Vets' "Dental Radiographs est. from $100, discuss with your vet" sits inside its wider dental cleaning price list (Barkes Corner & Brookfield Vets, retrieved 17 September 2026).
Southern Cross Pet Insurance publishes its own indicative cost ranges for common dog conditions that include the diagnostic work, though not broken out as a separate imaging line: "Skin allergies (diagnoses and annual treatment costs)" at $1,000 to $4,000, and "Arthritis (Diagnosis and annual treatment costs)" at $1,400 to $4,500, "indicative only for a Labrador," sourced from selected NZ clinics between 1 January and 31 October 2024, GST inclusive (Southern Cross Pet Insurance, retrieved 17 September 2026). Because diagnosing arthritis or a lameness commonly involves an x-ray, these ranges are the closest published NZ figure to what imaging contributes to a real bill.
Where a dog actually gets an x-ray, ultrasound, CT or MRI
Digital x-ray, and at some practices in-house ultrasound, are routine general-practice equipment. Nelson Vets lists "Digital Radiography (X-Rays)" and "In-house ultrasound" among its standard services, with "On-site Referral specialist ultrasound services" arranged separately for a more detailed scan (Nelson Vets, retrieved 17 September 2026). CT and MRI are only available through a handful of specialist referral hospitals, VSA (Auckland and Christchurch), ARC Vets (Auckland) and Rangiora Vet Centre (Canterbury), each requiring a referral from your regular vet, not a walk-in booking (VSA Imaging, ARC Vets, Rangiora Vet Centre, all retrieved 17 September 2026). It's most often ordered while working up a specific problem, a limp needing a hip dysplasia or cruciate ligament diagnosis, or an emergency presentation, rather than booked as a scan on its own.
Does pet insurance cover imaging, and what limit does it draw from?
None of the seven NZ pet insurers below publish a separate dollar sub-limit for x-rays, ultrasounds, CT or MRI scans. Where imaging is part of a covered accident or illness claim, its cost is paid from the insurer's ordinary annual benefit limit, or a relevant condition sub-limit such as cruciate ligament, where the scan is part of diagnosing that condition, rather than being capped on its own. Why don't NZ vet clinics list an x-ray or scan price online?
The price depends on variables a clinic can't fix in advance, how many views an x-ray needs, whether sedation or a general anaesthetic is needed, and for CT or MRI, which specialist hospital and radiologist are involved.
