We could not find a published, sourced price for a Cook Islands funeral in New Zealand, so this page does not quote one. The sourced national figures are an average of $11,700 for a full funeral with cremation and $14,300 with burial; a large gathering, a burial plot and sending the body to the islands each add to that.

A Cook Islands funeral in New Zealand is a funeral arranged by a Cook Islands family through the ordinary New Zealand system of funeral directors, cemeteries or crematoria, and (where the family chooses) a church. The Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand (FDANZ) found that in 2025 Pacific peoples were buried more often than any other group (70% in a council ground) and cremated least often (21%) (FDANZ 2026 Industry Trends Report). Customs differ between islands, churches and families, so this page describes the costs and the choices rather than a single set of rules. Your family's elders, your church minister and your funeral director are the right sources for what your family will do.

What we can and cannot say about customs

Te Ara, the government's encyclopedia, records that the London Missionary Society brought Christianity to the Cook Islands in the early 19th century, that most New Zealand Cook Islanders joined the Pacific Islanders' Congregational Church in the 1940s and 1950s, and that the Cook Islands Christian Church later opened branches here. By the 21st century most Cook Islands church services were in English, though five denominations still held services in Cook Islands Māori (Te Ara: Cook Islanders, Settlement, archived copy read 20 October 2026). Te Ara also describes the imene tuki as a traditional song (Te Ara: Cook Islanders, Culture), but in a passage about gatherings in the 1940s, not funerals.

We found no New Zealand government, council or Cook Islands institutional source that describes the steps of a Cook Islands funeral, so we do not list them. Our Pasifika funerals guide covers the wider context. If you are asked to attend or help, ask a family member what is expected of you.

What drives the cost

The size of the gathering is usually the biggest variable. These are FDANZ's indicative ranges as at July 2025; they vary by funeral director (FDANZ: Financial matters).

Item Indicative range
Professional services fee $3,000 to $6,500
Casket $1,200 to $5,000
Chapel hire $200 to $500
Celebrant or clergy $300 to $900
Catering $15 to $25 a head
Live-streaming $200 to $500
Burial: plot plus interment (council costs) $1,000 to $8,000
Cremation fee (council costs) $600 to $1,100

The catering line shows how quickly numbers grow. As an illustration, 200 guests at $15 to $25 a head is $3,000 to $5,000 before venue hire, and a hall or church may charge its own fee, which we could not source. Live-streaming at $200 to $500 is worth asking about when relatives are in the islands or Australia and cannot travel; see funeral livestreaming.

Because burial is common, the council's cemetery fee matters. On a weekday, plot plus burial for an adult is $6,770 at Manukau Memorial Gardens in Auckland and $3,460 at Christchurch City Council in 2026/27. Out-of-hours burials cost more: at Manukau, Auckland Council lists a Sunday burial at $1,235 and a public-holiday burial at $2,060. Our Auckland council fees page has the detail.

Funeral in New Zealand or sending the body home

If the family wants the burial in the Cook Islands, a funeral director arranges the repatriation. The only published figure we found is a repatriation fee of $5,950 to $7,690 on Dils's May 2026 price list, an Auckland director, and the list does not say what the fee includes. It is not a total, so do not assume freight, a transit casket or documentation are inside it. Ask any director for a written quote that lists each item.

FDANZ warns that the sending country, the receiving country and the airline each set rules for repatriation, and that it can take longer than families hope. It adds that ashes can go as hand luggage with the right documents, and that NZ Post does not accept ashes from the public (FDANZ: Repatriation). We did not source flight schedules, so ask the funeral director and the airline early whether the body can be carried to the island you have in mind, and whether your plans differ for Rarotonga and the outer islands. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade lists the Cook Islands High Commission in New Zealand as a contact for consular matters.

Money that can help

The Work and Income Funeral Grant has a maximum of $2,697.43 as at 1 April 2026. Work and Income counts moving a body to or from New Zealand, or holding the funeral overseas, as a reasonable cost when the person normally lived in New Zealand at death (Work and Income: Funeral Grant). It is tested on income and assets and is a contribution only. ACC's funeral grant of up to $8,236.40 applies only where the death is from a covered injury, and ACC allows the funeral or memorial to be in New Zealand or overseas (ACC).

Pacific people make up 15% of Funeral Grant claimants, according to FDANZ's Official Information Act data, and FDANZ reports that the Citizens Advice Bureau said the expense list leaves little room for cultural differences in mourning. If a family member needs to travel to a funeral and cannot afford it, Work and Income may help; see bereavement travel assistance. The funeral grant guide lays out the tests.

Does funeral cover pay fast enough?

Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance (issued by Momentum Life Limited) usually pays claims within 24 to 48 hours of approval, but approval comes after the claimant supplies proof such as a death certificate, so the clock does not start at the death (policy wording). Two limits matter. In the first 24 months it pays only for accidental death within 90 days of the accident; any other death in that period pays nothing and all premiums for that person are refunded. The benefit is a set amount between $3,000 and $30,000 towards costs, not a repatriation benefit. Total premiums can end up larger than the benefit, and it may not cover the whole funeral.

It accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75, and the wording says a person who was a New Zealander when the cover was issued is covered anywhere in the world. Momentum's rating from A.M. Best is B (Fair); see its financial strength page. Setting money aside is the alternative. The funeral insurance hub compares the options, and the Momentum buttons on this page lead to its online quote.

Questions to ask the funeral director

  1. What is the total for a funeral here, and what is excluded?
  2. If we send the body home, what does your fee include, and who quotes freight?
  3. Which documents are needed, and who arranges them?
  4. How long will it take, and can the plan change if flights do?
  5. Can the service be live-streamed for relatives overseas?

Adviser's view

We found no published, sourced price for a Cook Islands funeral, so we have not given one. The sourced national figures are the right starting point, and the big swing factors are the size of the gathering and whether the body is sent to the islands. Ask your funeral director for the repatriation cost in writing before deciding, because the one published fee we found does not say what it includes.
