We could not find a published, sourced price for a Samoan funeral in New Zealand, so this page does not quote one. The sourced starting point is the average full funeral for 50 guests: $11,700 with cremation or $14,300 with burial. A larger gathering, a church service, a plot and sending the body to Samoa each add to that.
Fa'alavelave is one of the values of the fa'asamoa, the Samoan way of life. Te Ara, the government's encyclopedia, lists it as "ceremonial and other family obligations", alongside aiga (family), lotu (church), matai (the chiefly system), gafa (genealogies) and the Samoan language (Te Ara: Samoans, Culture and identity). A funeral is one occasion when those obligations come to the surface. They are family obligations, not a fee. This page explains what we can source about them, how to turn that into a budget, and what help exists. It is general information for families and for people who work with them.
What fa'alavelave means
Te Ara says the fa'asamoa practised in New Zealand may differ from that in Samoa, and not every Samoan has the same understanding of it. What stays constant is "maintaining the family and links with the homeland": "Money, prayers, support, food, material goods, and even relatives themselves, circulate within families around the world". One New Zealand-born Samoan described the fa'asamoa in 1998 as "go to church, be a good Samoan, and that means to try your best at education, and looking after family, and go to family functions, plus that we've got to look after them when they're old." Te Ara also reports that in 2019 the equivalent of 16% of Samoa's economy was sent home by overseas family members, much of it from New Zealand (Te Ara: Samoans, Life in New Zealand).
We found no New Zealand source that lists what is given at a Samoan funeral, who gives it or what it is worth, so we do not describe fine mats, gifts of money or the order of presentations, and we do not put a price on them. Doing so from outside the community risks getting it wrong. For what is expected of you, ask your family's matai or elders, your minister and your funeral director.
Te Ara notes that in the early 2000s many Samoans belonged to the Presbyterian and Congregational churches, with considerable numbers of Roman Catholics, Latter-day Saints and a growing charismatic membership. Because lotu (church) is one of the values Te Ara lists, the family's own minister and church hall are the first call for questions about the service, timing and venue. Our Pasifika guide sets out the wider community picture.
Why there is no sourced Samoan price
The Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand (FDANZ) publishes averages for one scenario: a full funeral with 50 attendees at a funeral home, catering, a celebrant, a mid-price casket and a weekday transfer. It is $11,700 for cremation (range $10,000 to $13,900) and $14,300 for burial (range $12,800 to $17,000) (FDANZ 2026 Industry Trends Report). It publishes nothing by ethnicity, and neither do the price lists we read. Any figure for a Samoan funeral on the internet is therefore an estimate with no named source, and we have left out the ranges that circulate.
Building your own budget
A budget has two parts: the director's bill, and the costs that sit outside it. FDANZ's indicative ranges as at July 2025 are in the table, and they vary by funeral director (FDANZ: Financial matters).
| Item | Indicative range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Professional services fee | $3,000 to $6,500 | The director's core fee |
| Casket | $1,200 to $5,000 | Cheaper cremation caskets exist |
| Burial: plot plus interment | $1,000 to $8,000 | Council costs |
| Cremation fee | $600 to $1,100 | Council costs |
| Celebrant or clergy | $300 to $900 | Ask the church separately |
| Catering | $15 to $25 a head | The item that grows most with numbers |
| Live-streaming | $200 to $500 | For relatives who cannot travel |
| Newspaper notice | $150 to $500 or more |
For a large gathering, catering is the line to model. As an illustration only, 300 guests at $15 to $25 a head is $4,500 to $7,500 (our arithmetic) before any venue or hall fee, which we could not source for churches. Auckland's Manukau Memorial Gardens charges $6,770 for the adult burial right and the burial on a weekday; a Sunday burial adds $1,235 and a public-holiday burial $2,060 (Auckland Council: cemetery fees and charges). Te Ara said that in 2013 one in three Samoan New Zealanders lived in the Manukau ward, so that figure is a reasonable local benchmark for many families. See what a funeral costs in New Zealand.
Then list the costs the director does not see: travel for relatives, gifts the family has agreed to give, and the contribution each household will make. Agree these at one family meeting, and write them down.
Sending a body to Samoa, or a death there
If the family wants the burial in Samoa, a funeral director arranges the repatriation. The only published fee we found is a repatriation fee of $5,950 to $7,690 on one Auckland director's May 2026 price list, and the list does not say what the fee includes (Dils price list). Do not treat it as a total. FDANZ says repatriation must meet the rules of the sending and receiving countries and the airline, and can take longer than hoped; ashes can travel as hand luggage with the right documents, and NZ Post does not accept ashes from the public (FDANZ: Repatriation). Our repatriation page covers this in more detail.
If someone dies while visiting Samoa, Govt.nz says to contact the nearest New Zealand embassy or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and that "any costs must be paid for by the family". Depositing an overseas death certificate with Births, Deaths and Marriages costs $55 plus $25 for a statement, but that page was last updated in 2022, so confirm the fees (Govt.nz: When someone dies overseas).
Money that can help
The Work and Income Funeral Grant has a maximum of $2,697.43 as at 1 April 2026, which is 23% of FDANZ's $11,700 average (our arithmetic). It can include reasonable costs of moving a body to or from New Zealand, or an overseas funeral, if the person normally lived in New Zealand at death. It is tested on income and assets, and prepaid funeral money counts as an asset (Work and Income: Funeral Grant). Work and Income's guidance on reasonable expenses lists items such as venue, food and clergy and adds cultural, spiritual or religious practices (expense guidance). We found no source saying that fine mats or gifts of money count, so ask Work and Income before assuming they do. ACC's funeral grant, up to $8,236.40, applies only where the death is from a covered injury (ACC). For a relative who cannot afford the flight, see bereavement travel assistance.
Can funeral insurance help?
It can help a family plan, within limits. Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance, issued by Momentum Life Limited, accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75, with no health questions, and an adult child can own a policy on a parent. It pays a fixed benefit of $3,000 to $30,000 towards costs. In the first 24 months it pays only for accidental death within 90 days of the accident; for any other death in that period, premiums are refunded. Total premiums can end up larger than the benefit, and the benefit may not cover the whole funeral. It does not replace a family budget, and putting money aside is the alternative. Momentum Life is rated B (Fair) by A.M. Best (Momentum: financial strength). See what funeral insurance is and funeral insurance for a death overseas. Questions to ask
- What does the full estimate include, and what does it leave out?
- Does your fee for sending a body to Samoa include freight, a transit casket and documents?
- Can the church or hall give a written cost for the day?
- What will the family contribute, and who keeps the record?
- Can the service be live-streamed for relatives overseas?
How we made this page

Adviser's view
We could not source a price for a Samoan funeral, and we have not borrowed one from an unsourced figure. The honest starting point is the sourced national average of $11,700 with cremation or $14,300 with burial for 50 guests, then to add what your family's gathering, church and any trip to Samoa will cost. Fa'alavelave are family obligations, so budget them with the family, in advance, not after the bill arrives.
