A council burial in New Zealand is charged in separate parts: the plot, which councils such as Auckland and Dunedin call a burial right; the interment fee for opening and closing the grave; and in some towns a maintenance fee. On the schedules we read on 20 October 2026, a weekday adult burial totals about $2,754 at Wellington's Mākara, $3,460 in Christchurch, $4,760 in Nelson, $6,082 in Dunedin, $6,770 in Auckland's Manukau Memorial Gardens and $8,426 in Tauranga (sums ours).
A plot price on its own can mislead. A council that advertises a low plot price may charge more to open the grave, and one with a high plot price may have the maintenance included. This page lays out each fee and what it pays for, so you can compare like with like. For the whole funeral bill around the grave, see burial cost in NZ.
What each charge is
- Plot or burial right. The fee to be allocated a plot. Auckland's and Dunedin's schedules call it a burial right ("rights"), and list it apart from the interment fee. The terms of the right, such as how long it lasts, are the council's to state, so ask for them in writing.
- Interment fee. The fee for opening the grave, the burial and filling it in. Auckland lists a single-depth adult burial at $1,410 and a double-depth one at $1,545 at Manukau.
- Maintenance or service fee. A charge for upkeep. Dunedin charges a one-off service fee, Wellington lists maintenance as its own line, and Tauranga's plot price includes maintenance in perpetuity and the memorial permit.
- Extras. Out-of-hours uplifts, a permit to place a headstone or plaque, and non-resident charges.
Council fees compared
All figures are for a weekday adult burial of a resident, GST inclusive, from each council's own page on 20 October 2026. Totals are our sums.
| Council | Plot or right | Interment | Other lines | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Christchurch, 2026/27 | $2,071 full-size plot | $1,389 | none listed | $3,460 |
| Nelson, 2026/27 | $3,315 | $1,445 | none listed | $4,760 |
| Dunedin, 2026/27, 14 main cemeteries | $2,863.40 | $2,061.10 | $1,157.90 one-off service fee | $6,082.40 |
| Auckland, Manukau, lawn | $5,360 | $1,410 | none | $6,770 |
| Wellington, Mākara, plaque lawn | $1,095 | $769 | $211 beam, $679 maintenance | $2,754 |
| Tauranga, Pyes Pā, 2026/27 | $6,388 incl. maintenance | $2,038 | none | $8,426 |
Read the table with care. Wellington's $2,754 includes a beam and maintenance, while plot plus interment alone is $1,864. Tauranga's plot price includes maintenance in perpetuity and Christchurch lists no maintenance line. Auckland's and Wellington's pages print no fee year, so we call them current as published on the day we read them. Areas within one cemetery also differ: at Mākara a denominational area totals $3,424 and a natural burial area $3,615, and Auckland's Manukau Muslim areas have a right of $5,980.
Hamilton's page was last updated in July 2022 and its figures do not match FDANZ's July 2025 figure for Hamilton, so we do not give Hamilton fees. Karori Cemetery's fee page would not load for us, so we do not quote it either.
How the councils' totals compare nationally
The Funeral Directors Association (FDANZ) averaged council burial costs on a sample of 15 councils at $4,865 in 2025, from $1,455 at Taupō to $7,207 at New Plymouth. Its July 2025 totals included Auckland $6,570, Dunedin $5,877, Tauranga $5,614, Nelson $4,622 and Christchurch $3,356 (FDANZ 2026 Industry Trends Report). Christchurch's 2026/27 total of $3,460 is 3.1% above that figure (our sum). FDANZ's separate council-cost sheet lists 23 councils with a 2025 burial average of $4,359, so always check which sample a quoted "average" comes from (FDANZ council costs). Tauranga's published total is well above FDANZ's July 2025 figure, and the bases may differ, so we do not calculate a rise.
Ash plots and double depth
Ashes cost much less to bury. Christchurch charges $598 for an ash plot and $277 to place ashes. Nelson charges $312 for an ash interment. Auckland lists ash burial at $390 with ash plots from $1,650. Dunedin lists a family ash plot at $683.90 plus a $293.80 service fee, and $216.70 for an ash interment. FDANZ puts an ash plot plus interment at about $1,300 added to a cremation.
On double depth, Auckland's Manukau interment fee is $135 higher than single depth, at $1,545 against $1,410 (our sum). We found no published long-term price comparison for double-depth plots and no sourced price for an above-ground vault, so we give none.
Surcharges to ask about
- Non-residents. Nelson adds $2,312 to a burial plot and $805 to an ash plot if the person was not a Nelson resident. Wellington lists separate out-of-district fees, for example a casket plot at $1,306 for someone who had lived outside Wellington City for five years or more. We found no non-resident charge on the Christchurch or Tauranga pages, and could not confirm Auckland or Dunedin.
- Time of the burial. Tauranga adds $900 for a Saturday or a weekday burial after 4pm, and $1,030 on a public holiday. Wellington lists a $251 fee for funerals booked after 3.15pm. Nelson adds $351 for a weekend and has no Sunday burials.
- Headstone permits. $87 in Christchurch, $105.10 in Dunedin, $108 in Wellington and $205 at Auckland's Manukau. Headstone prices are covered in headstones.
Before you choose a plot
- Contact the council at least 24 hours before the burial to choose a plot. You pay at once, or show that Work and Income or ACC will pay (Community Law).
- Ask which fee year applies, since fees reset on 1 July.
- Ask what the burial right covers, how long it lasts, and what maintenance is included.
- Ask whether a second burial in the same plot is possible and at what cost. We found no sourced figures on this.
- Ask whether buying a plot ahead of time is possible. We did not find sourced council terms on advance purchase, so ask the council directly.
If a family cannot pay and the person left too little, the Burial and Cremation Act lets a council that runs a cemetery bury a poor person free on a Justice's order (section 49) (Legislation: Burial and Cremation Act 1964). FDANZ says some councils still expect an application to Work and Income first. See natural burial, Wellington's fees and the Funeral Grant for more. Our burial vs cremation guide compares the choices.
Adviser's view
The plot price is only part of the council's bill. Opening the grave, and in some towns a maintenance fee, are charged separately, and the combined total ranges from about $2,750 at Wellington's Mākara to about $8,400 in Tauranga on the figures we read. Compare the total, not the plot price, and check the date on any fee page.
