Niuean funeral customs, costs and returning a loved one to Niue

We found no published source that sets a price for a Niuean funeral in New Zealand, so we give none. The costs that are published are the funeral director, cemetery and catering figures that apply to any funeral: an FDANZ average of $14,300 for a full funeral with burial for 50 guests. Returning a person to Niue adds a repatriation cost that has no published figure.

A Niuean funeral in New Zealand is a family and community event that usually includes a church service and a gathering, and customs differ by village, church and family. Most Niueans live in New Zealand: Wikipedia says that as of 2006 between 90 and 95 percent of Niueans lived in New Zealand, and that about 1,700 people were counted in Niue at the 2022 census. Under New Zealand law all Niueans are New Zealand citizens, MFAT says, and Niue uses the New Zealand dollar (MFAT: Niue). We have not had this page checked by a Niuean community leader, and the customs section is short because our sources are silent. Please treat your family, elders and church minister as the authority.

What we know about Pacific funerals in New Zealand

FDANZ's 2026 report says Pacific peoples have the highest burial rate, 70 percent in a council ground, and the lowest cremation rate, 21 percent. It also says a more traditional funeral remains the norm for Pacific peoples (FDANZ: 2026 Industry Trends Report). These are figures for Pacific peoples as a whole, not for Niueans alone. They suggest that many families plan a burial, and our burial or cremation guide compares them. FDANZ also says religious belief decides timing for some people and families may choose to wait a few days, for example if relatives are travelling (FDANZ: Funeral and farewell choices).

Published costs

FDANZ's 2026 report gives these averages for a defined scenario of 50 attendees, catering, a celebrant, a mid-priced casket and a weekday transfer.

Scenario Average Range
Full funeral with cremation $11,700 $10,000 to $13,900
Full funeral with burial $14,300 $12,800 to $17,000
Unattended cremation, no service $4,700 Not published

Component ranges, indicative as at July 2025, include celebrant or clergy at $300 to $900, a casket at $1,200 to $5,000, a burial plot plus interment at $1,000 to $8,000 and catering at $15 to $25 a head (FDANZ: Financial matters). Our funeral costs hub has council fees.

A worked example for a large gathering

Where a funeral involves hundreds of people over several days, the scenario above understates the cost. This is our arithmetic, using FDANZ's catering range, and not a Niuean price:

Change the numbers to your own, and ask the hall, the church and relatives who will cook or contribute. Hall hire has no published range we could use.

Returning a loved one to Niue

FDANZ warns that regulations and procedures vary between countries and that meeting them can take longer than families would like (FDANZ: Repatriation). Wikipedia's Niue article says Air New Zealand is the sole airline and flies to Niue from Auckland twice a week. We could not verify the current schedule or whether and how the airline carries human remains, so confirm both before you book anything.

Questions to put to a funeral director:

  1. How many days can the body be held in a mortuary while flights and documents are arranged?
  2. Which documents does Niue require, and who prepares them?
  3. Does the airline accept the casket, what packaging is needed, and which flight is possible?
  4. What is the total in writing, including the director's repatriation fee and freight?
  5. Who in Niue will receive the body and arrange the burial?

For a funeral in Niue, Work and Income's guidance covers a funeral held overseas for someone who normally lived in New Zealand when they died, so ask them before you book (Work and Income: Funeral Grant, funeral overseas). ACC also allows a funeral or memorial in New Zealand or overseas where the death resulted from a covered injury (ACC: financial support after a death). Our repatriation costs guide covers repatriation generally.

Where funeral insurance fits

A policy pays a fixed benefit to the beneficiary, so it does not meet a community's shared costs on its own. Our guide asks whether funeral insurance is worth it. Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance, issued by Momentum Life Limited, accepts New Zealanders aged 40 to 75, who must be living in New Zealand at application, and pays $3,000 to $30,000 towards costs. In the first 24 months it pays only for accidental death within 90 days of the accident. Total premiums can exceed the benefit, and the benefit may not cover a funeral of the size above. Momentum's A.M. Best rating is B (Fair), in the "Vulnerable" range (Momentum Life: Financial Strength). The funeral insurance hub compares other products. The buttons on this page open Momentum Life's online application. QuoteHub is a Momentum Life partner, and Smiths Insurance & KiwiSaver may receive a commission if you buy a policy.

Adviser's view

We found no published sources on Niuean funeral customs or prices, so this page does not describe customs in detail and gives no price for a Niuean funeral. The costs that are published are the funeral director, cemetery and hosting figures that apply to any funeral, and the extra cost of repatriation has no published figure. Speak to your church minister, family elders and a funeral director early, especially if the funeral will be in Niue.
