An unattended funeral is a cremation with no funeral service and no mourners present. The funeral director collects the person, completes the paperwork, arranges the cremation and returns the ashes to the family. The Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand (FDANZ) put the average price of an unattended cremation at $4,700 in its 2025 member survey (FDANZ, 2026 Industry Trends Report).

The terms overlap. "Unattended", "direct" and "no-service" cremation usually mean the same thing, though firms use "simple cremation" for a version that adds a viewing or gathering. Here, "unattended funeral" means no ceremony at the time of cremation and nobody from the family there. It does not describe a death that nobody witnessed, which is a different matter. This page covers what the choice involves and how to make it. Pricing is on our direct cremation cost page, so we keep numbers brief here.

How common it is

FDANZ's report gives two figures for 2025 on different pages: unattended cremations at 23% of funerals on one page, 17% on another. The two do not agree, so we say roughly a fifth. The report puts 60% of funerals as attended services and says the remainder were private family goodbyes and unattended cremations. It also says small private farewells are growing, to 17% in 2025 from 15% in 2023.

What happens, step by step

  1. The death is certified. A doctor or nurse practitioner completes the cause-of-death certificate. A death referred to the coroner follows a separate route, and cremation cannot proceed until the coroner has authorised it.
  2. The director collects the person and arranges care. Much of the paperwork is the director's job and is part of the professional fee.
  3. The family signs the application. Form A, the application for cremation, is signed by an executor or a near relative, and the signature must be witnessed.
  4. A doctor or nurse practitioner completes Form B, or the newer Form BA, introduced by the Cremation Amendment Regulations 2026. They cannot issue it if the death was reported to police or the coroner, unless the coroner decides not to open an inquiry.
  5. A medical referee reviews the papers and, if satisfied, issues permission to cremate. Referees check that the cause of death is clear and that nothing prevents cremation.
  6. The cremation takes place, typically taking two to four hours, and the ashes are returned in a simple container, usually plastic.

That sequence is from Health NZ (page updated 22 July 2026) and FDANZ (Health NZ: Cremation; FDANZ: Burial or cremation). Some summaries describe "Forms B, C and F". Health NZ names Form A, Form B or BA and the referee's permission, and does not list a Form C or F, so follow your director on forms.

What is in the price and what is not

The headline price may be only the director's professional fee, or it may include the crematorium fee, a basic casket and a death certificate. One Auckland list shows $3,030 for a direct cremation with no service or viewing, with crematorium and documentation fees separate, while a Christchurch plan from $4,215 includes cremation fee, casket and certificate (Dils price list, May 2026; Simplicity Funerals Christchurch). These are not like for like, so ask each provider for the total in writing. Council cremation fees alone range from $750 (Auckland adult) to $1,182.20 (Dunedin) in the councils we checked, and are listed on our cremation cost guide. We do not give regional price claims beyond those published sources.

What families often miss

FDANZ says many families do not realise that if they say "just a cremation" they will have no chance for a final farewell. Before you choose, ask about each of these:

When it may not fit

Legally the choice sits with the executor or, without one, the closest relative, who is expected to weigh whānau views and cultural, religious and spiritual practice (Community Law). For many families, an unattended cremation will not meet cultural or religious needs. FDANZ reports that for Māori whānau a viewing is almost always required, and that Pacific peoples had the lowest cremation rate in 2025, at 21%. Where a tradition matters, talk to the director and the community first. Our tangihanga guide covers one example.

Paying for it

The Work and Income Funeral Grant of up to $2,697.43 can be paid where the person was your partner, parent or guardian, your child under 18, or a single person over 18 whose funeral you arrange, subject to income and asset tests. Cremation fees count as a reasonable expense (Work and Income: Funeral Grant). That maximum is about 57% of FDANZ's $4,700 average, our arithmetic. ACC pays up to $8,236.40 where the death was from a covered injury. If the person took out funeral insurance, see what funeral insurance is and how it pays.

Planning ahead with funeral insurance

Funeral insurance is a way to set a fixed sum aside for costs like these ahead of time. It is not something to settle while you are arranging a funeral. Momentum Life's Funeral Insurance, issued by Momentum Life Limited, is open to applicants aged 40 to 75 who meet its New Zealand residency rules, with no health questions. It pays a set benefit of $3,000 to $30,000 towards costs. In the first 24 months the benefit is paid only if death follows an accident (within 90 days of it); for any other cause nothing is paid and the premiums are refunded. Added together, premiums can come to more than the benefit, and the benefit may not cover a whole funeral. A.M. Best rates Momentum Life B (Fair); see its financial strength page. Adviser's view

An unattended cremation can be a calm, lower-cost choice, and some families are glad of it. The risk is deciding in a hurry: FDANZ says many families do not realise that asking for 'just a cremation' means no chance for a final farewell. Ask about a viewing or a short family goodbye before you settle.
